Whereabouts OR Shifting Stations

The purpose of this exercise is to encourage confidence and fluidity in the exchange of roles while improvising in a small ensemble.

Three singers stand in a semi-circle.

First singer starts a motor. Next singer enters with an interlock. Last singer adds a contrast.

When someone breaks out from their role into a new motor, interlock, or contrast,
the other two players must adjust their parts and their functions to ensure that all jobs are covered.

e.g. if the Contrast starts a new Motor, the other two singers (previously functioning as Motor and Interlock) must immediately switch to Interlock and Contrast to support the new idea)

Repetition is encouraged, but not mandatory. Throughout the improvisation, parts can evolve without having to change function.  For Motor and Interlock, there should be a sense of steady recurrence, even if the pattern does not repeat exactly. For Contrast, there is more room for variation. Advanced singers might listen for opportunities to keep continuity in their part even as they exchange roles.

Rinse and repeat.
